Bismarck State College (BSC) (est. 1939), the fourth largest college in the North Dakota university system with approximately 3500 students, is a comprehensive community college that offers two-year, four-year, and master's level degrees.
HistoryBismarck State College was a bold, Depression-era experiment. As North Dakota's first two-year city college, BSC became an example for others and over the years has grown at a pace most likely unforeseen by its early promoters.
Created in 1939 inresponse to a community need for a local college, it was originally known as Bismarck Junior College. Enabling legislation provided for the establishment of junior colleges had been passed by the 22nd Legislative Assembly in 1931.
In1984 the College became part of North Dakota's system of higher education, and in 3 years the college's name was changedto Bismarck State College.
Bismarck State College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The College was initially accredited in 1966.
Academics
BSC offers the first two years of education toward a bachelor's degree in most fields. It offers 20+ bachelor's degree and several graduate programs in conjunction with other university system institutions. Approximately 35 technical programs are offered, and more than 150 courses are offered online. Unique to the institution are degrees in energy education, including power and process plant technology, ethanol training, nuclear power technology, and electric power technology. Bismarck State College also offers technical degrees in areas ranging from network/system administration to web design.
As the largest community college in North Dakota, Bismarck State College has something to offer everyone. BSC provides quality undergraduate and technical education opportunities. Small class size, affordability, and a low teacher to student ratio make BSC a great place to learn. We have outstanding faculty whose primary mission is teaching. Our faculty and staff take a personal interest in students and "go the extra mile" to help students succeed in the classroom and beyond. Wherever your career path may lead, BSC is the place to begin.Mission
